No more Spanish!

Raising bilingual kids is not for the weak! Allow me to share our story. I remember when my son hit a standstill in his Spanish learning, and it was tough! The standstill? He flat-out refused to keep learning Spanish. Ack! Saying I was crushed would be an understatement… I had to step back, breathe, and refocus.

As hard as it was for my broken corazón de mamá, I respected his decision and didn’t push him. Still, I kept speaking to him in Spanish and every year we traveled to Puerto Rico, where he was fully immersed in the language, even if he refused to speak it. Then, almost a year later, something shifted. His mindset changed, and he came to me asking for help to improve his Spanish. My first reaction? I wanted to jump up and hug him…

…but since he was a tween, I kept it cool. You know, that stage where hugs and kisses are off-limits.😅

My Bilingual Superpowers

From that moment on, we celebrated his bilingualism as a superpower! And that’s why I want my students, and all bilingual children to celebrate theirs too. Watching my son reclaim his Spanish reminded me that even when kids resist, the seed we plant is still there, growing its roots. While my 17-year-old has outgrown picture books, I poured that same corazón de mamá into my new book ¡Mis Superpoderes Bilingües! / My Bilingual Superpowers! to encourage children, especially those who may feel reluctant about learning a second language to see bilingualism as their superpower.

Raising bilingual kids takes patience, love, and faith that the seeds we plant will one day bloom. 🌱 ¡Mis Superpoderes Bilingües! / My Bilingual Superpowers! is my way of helping families, teachers, and students nurture that journey and celebrate bilingualism for the superpower it truly is.
