Imagina una foto. Sonríe, clic, ¡eso! / Click! Snap! Picture That! by Dieter Böge and illustrated by Benjamin Gottwald had me smiling the minute I opened the book. As both a bilingual parent and a Spanish teacher, this book is a real find. The premise, animals imagining their dream identities like a rock star pig or a goalie frog, gives kids a funny, low-stakes way to talk about something big: how they want to be seen versus how they see themselves, which matters especially for bilingual and heritage language kids navigating identity across two languages and cultures.
The repetitive, predictable pattern (each animal taking its turn with its own dream) is exactly the kind of structure that makes a story readable in a second language before a child is fully fluent, letting them anticipate and “read along” using context and pictures rather than needing full vocabulary mastery.

Los perros finos by Tini Malina and translated by Mariana Llanos is an easy favorite to reach for. This book is funny with dogs looking elegant one moment and then rolling in the mud or drinking from the toilet the next because dogs are dogs, after all! Readers will be laughing out loud! Los perros finos is silly and warm. Dog lovers old and young will find this story quite entertaining.

Tres deseos by author and illustrator, Chris Saunders is a story of friendship and generosity. It is beautifully illustrated with warm tones that are muted and earthy. The colors are calming and inviting as we follow along the rabbit’s journey asking his friends what they would ask for if granted a wish. He has three special seeds for three wishes. So off he goes through the forest asking mouse, fox and bear for their wishes. He thinks they are good, but they are not his wishes. What will the rabbit do? He does what only a good friend would do? Can you guess? This book is the perfect bedtime story (or anytime, too!) and your little ones will love it.

Buscar by author and illustrator Olga de Dios will help readers see that there’s more in front of them if only they actually look. This is the story of Bu, who looks and looks, but what is Bu looking for? But there’s a problem: he’s always looking down. Even as friends walk past him and say hello, he doesn’t “see” them. What, oh, what can make him look up? You’ll have to read it to find out.
I absolutely love this book because it encourages readers to be observant and to discover all that surrounds them. The text is easy to follow, featuring read, to find (buscar) and count activities throughout its pages. The illustrations are colorful and whimsical. This is the perfect book for classrooms and homes alike.
