About Spanish Easy Readers
Finding the perfect balance between language accessibility and cultural richness can be challenging when teaching Spanish to beginners. Too often, Spanish-language learners encounter books that are difficult to read and understand, leaving them disconnected from the beautiful stories and traditions of Hispanic culture. This disconnect inspired me to transform Coco, la cotorra puertorriqueña into a Spanish easy reader that would make cultural learning truly accessible.
These four exceptional Spanish easy readers address this challenge by combining comprehensible input with meaningful cultural content. Each book uses cognates, high-frequency vocabulary, and accessible language structures while preserving the heart of Hispanic traditions from Puerto Rican conservation efforts to Colombian celebrations, Afro-Venezuelan heritage, and Mexican environmental awareness.
Whether you’re a bilingual family seeking to nurture Spanish language skills at home or an educator looking to bring authentic culture into your classroom, these books offer the perfect bridge between language learning and cultural understanding.
Coco, la cotorra isn’t alone in her mission! Here are four exceptional Spanish easy readers that blend storytelling, culture, and comprehensible language learning, transforming complex cultural stories into accessible adventures for Spanish language learners.

Book 1: Coco, la cotorra written by me and illustrated by Alejandra López
I created an adapted version and wrote Coco, la cotorra: a Spanish easy reader designed specifically for Spanish learners. Set in Puerto Rico, this story follows the endangered Puerto Rican parrot and explores the challenges they face during and after captivity.
This simplified adaptation uses comprehensible input, cognates, and present tense to ensure accessibility while preserving the story’s essential themes: dialects, bilingualism, and Puerto Rican parrot conservation efforts. Created specifically for beginning readers, the book contains 496 carefully chosen words and includes a bilingual glossary that supports vocabulary development. Coco, la cotorra serves as an invaluable resource for both bilingual families nurturing Spanish language skills at home and educators fostering literacy in the classroom.

Book 3: Zander pregunta by Viviana López and illustrated by Verove Pinto
Zander pregunta draws inspiration from the author’s own bicultural son, who lives in the USA with parents from Venezuela and the United States. When inquisitive Zander asks where chocolate comes from, this simple question turns into a comprehensible story rich with cognates and accessible language. The story weaves together Afro-Venezuelan culture and the ancient tradition of Chuao cocoa with colorful illustrations, creating a perfect blend of culture, history, and easy reading for Spanish-language learners.
