Spanish for California Nurses Continuing Education: How to Communicate with the Spanish-speaking Patient

Offering two different programs, we provide the opportunity for nurses to learn Spanish, no matter what your level. Each program includes:

Travel arrangements are not included and BRN approval extends only to continuing education courses and does not include tour arrangements.

Beginner/Intermediate Level

Spanish for Nursing Continuing Education: How to Communicate with the Spanish-speaking Patient, Beginner/Intermediate Level:  30 Continuing Education Hours of Spanish in a healthcare context for the nursing and/or healthcare professional.  The beginner/intermediate level program is for the nurse and/or healthcare professional with little to no knowledge of Spanish & basic grammar.  It consists of 30 hours of beginner to intermediate grammar, terminology, phrases, & idioms  pertaining to the body, healthcare scenarios, natural disasters & cultural considerations.  Role-playing & group activities are done with native Spanish speakers in a healthcare and nurse/patient scenario as well as incorporation of a cultural context.

Upon completion of this program, the nurse will be able to:

a) demonstrate basic Spanish verbal & written communication by demonstrating knowledge of the  most commonly used sentences and questions in Spanish, in a healthcare context
b) translate and interpret terminology, phrases, and idioms related to healthcare from English to Spanish and vice versa.
c) communicate verbally with the Spanish-speaking patient
d) use the terminology, phrases, and idioms in this course to identify and assess the Spanish-speaking patient’s needs, and educate the patient regarding the plan of action.
e) re-evaluate for effectiveness and changes in patient condition, using newly acquired Spanish language skills.

Intermediate/Advanced Level

Spanish for Nursing Continuing Education: How to Communicate with the Spanish-speaking Patient, Intermediate/Advanced Level:  30 Continuing Education Hours of Spanish in a healthcare context for the nursing and/or healthcare professional.  The intermediate/advanced level program is for the nurse and/or healthcare professional with prior knowledge of Spanish & basic grammar.  It consists of 30 hours of intermediate to advanced grammar, terminology, phrases,& idioms pertaining to the body systems, many in-hospital healthcare scenarios, natural disasters & cultural considerations.  Role-playing & group activities are done with native Spanish speakers in a healthcare and nurse/patient scenario as well as incorporation of a cultural context.

Upon completion of this program, the nurse will be able to:

a) converse in Spanish and demonstrate an increased knowledge of Spanish grammar, idioms, phrases, & terminology in a healthcare context.
b) communicate with Spanish-speaking patients to better identify and assess their needs.
c) develop and communicate a nursing plan in Spanish
d) use the terminology, phrases, and idioms in this course to identify and assess the Spanish-speaking patient’s needs, and educate the patient regarding the plan of action.
e) re-evaluate for effectiveness and changes in patient condition, using improved Spanish language skills

Laly, Ecuadorian instructor for Spanish for nurses continuing education EcuadorInstructor Laly Monge, a Literature & Linguistics professor, has many decades experience teaching both Spanish and English, in adult and school settings. She also has previous and current experience volunteering with pediatric cancer patients, both in-patient and out-patient, and resides in her native country of Ecuador.

Refund Policy:  Refunds will be granted in full with a greater than 30 day cancellation notification.  Refunds of 50% of the course cost will be granted if the cancellation notification is less than 30 days from the event.  No refunds are granted for absentee attendance. For course cancellation by the provider, 100% refund will be given.
